Want it hard enough

Everyone says they have dreams. Everyone says they want to do this, become that, achieve something great.

But when they start talking about it, you can feel it.

There's no excitement. No hunger. No real desire in their voice.

Why is that?

From what I've seen, a lot of people spend their lives trying to fulfill other people's dreams and expectations instead of their own. They don't do it on purpose. Most of the time, they don't even realize it.

They start a sport. They go to the gym. They go to university. They choose a career. They chase goals because those are the things they feel like they're supposed to do.

But they rarely stop and ask themselves one simple question:

Do I actually want this?

I think this is one of the biggest reasons people become mediocre at the things they try to achieve.

There's no real hunger behind what they're doing.

And not having that hunger slowly destroys your ability to become truly great at something. Because when things get difficult—and they always do—discipline can only take you so far. At some point, you need to genuinely want what's on the other side.

I once heard a saying:

“Do what makes you eager to wake up tomorrow so you can continue doing it.”

That has stuck with me ever since.

Whether it's a job, a hobby, a sport, a business, or even a person, you have to want it badly enough. You have to care enough that putting in the work doesn't constantly feel like you're forcing yourself to do something you hate.

Because nobody starts something thinking:

“I want to be mediocre at this.”

So if you're going to dedicate your time, energy, and years of your life to something, make sure it's something you actually want.

Not something your parents want.

Not something society tells you to want.

Not something that simply sounds impressive when you tell other people about it.

Something that makes you want to wake up tomorrow and keep going.

And if you don't feel that way about what you're doing?

Maybe the problem isn't that you're lazy.

Maybe you just don't want it hard enough.
